Groundwork North East - Consultation on Pocket Parks

Gateshead Council are working with Groundwork North East to transform two demolition sites on the High Street into ‘pocket parks’.

Pocket Parks are temporary spaces that can be used by the community to relax, get closer to nature or take part in events and activities.

The pocket parks aim to provide interim use of cleared sites as Gateshead Centre undergoes major regeneration. The aim is to support existing businesses and attract new ones, increase footfall and enliven streets for residents and visitors.

Attached to this post are a location plan, plans for the two sites and ideas for activities for you to view.

The first site (page 1) is located at Jet  Amusements. This space will have wildflower planting and will also have hoarding which can have local artwork on it or can promote local events. Potentially there could be a space behind the hoarding for use by a community group for gardening or exhibitions.

The second site (page 2) is next to Curley’s pub. This site will offer people the chance to experience nature with tree and wildflower planting and seating areas and could also be the venue for activities and events on the platform area. Some ideas for activities are shown on page 3, we would like to know your ideas too.

Both sites also use gabion baskets which are wire baskets full of demolition rubble to remind us of the previous uses of the sites. Gable ends of neighbouring properties will also be painted in complementary colours but could also be a ‘canvas’ for local artists.

We would like to know what you think of the designs and how you would use the spaces. What activities would you like to see in the spaces?

We would also like to know if you would like to be involved. Would you like to volunteer at the site? Are you part of a group who could use the platform?

You can let us know by leaving comments on this site using the contact link above  between 8th April and 15th April.
